Philosophy of Education

I believe education should take place in a safe, caring environment. All children and adults should feel that they are in an environment in which no harm will come to them. Learning proper social etiquette, morals, and responsibility should be entwined in the everyday learning. Students and staff should take pride in their physical environment and help to maintain it.

In my opinion it is essential for teachers and students to be held accountable for their actions. The teacher is a role model, teaching more than academics. If they are not acting in an ethical, professional, and responsible manner, the students will not learn to act responsibly either. When teaching any subject, students should be able to find value in learning, or the knowledge will not be retained. Combining technology in our lessons help students to relate what they are studying.

Technology plays a crucial role in today’s education. All teachers have an important role in providing proper education in the use of computers and other technology. This no longer falls solely on the computer teacher. It is imperative that all teachers consider the safety of the students while using technology. Cyber etiquette and proper use of the internet need to be incorporated into our curriculum. Teachers also need to address issues such as cyber bullying in their classrooms.

I also believe that a quality teacher finds a way to relate to their students personally. They will motivate, support, and guide their students so that the students can become better citizens. An educator takes their role seriously and is not afraid to give emotional support. The students will understand that the quality teacher is not there to be their friend, but to be a trusted advisor. Students should realize that they can rely on their teachers.

All students deserve an equal opportunity to learn. Not everyone can accomplish the same task in equal amounts of time. This makes differentiating instruction a vital component in teaching today’s children. Each child should be given tasks that will challenge them and help them grow.

As an educator it is crucial to reflect on my behavior and performance. Every child in my classroom deserves the same treatment and respect. It is very easy to focus on only the self-motivated or difficult child. The average child also deserves the attention of the teacher. If I reflect on my actions, I can adjust my behavior to make my classroom a more equitable learning  environment.
